Unlocking more work for riders across Hong Kong

Since the COVID-19 outbreak began in early 2020, the way customers use Deliveroo has changed. The days and times customers typically place orders are less predictable, and have led to higher demand at different times. As we entered the fourth wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong two months ago, and as the dine-in ban and other restrictions remain with the recent resurgence in cases, we expect this volatility in ordering patterns to continue.

Lots of you have also told us that you want more flexibility when you work with us. In a recent survey, 89% of riders told us the ability to work when you want was important to you, and almost three times as many riders said they favoured a system that enables them to go online at any time compared to those who favoured a booking system.

With this in mind, and following the successful launch of free login in 11 zones so far, these 22 zones will switch to free login on the 23rd Jan, 2021 (Saturday):

And followed by all the remaining 5 zones switch on 30th Jan, 2021 (Saturday) :

Free login enables you to go online and accept orders anytime within our operating hours, without booking sessions in advance. This increases your flexibility and control over how you work with us, meaning you can ride and earn whenever and wherever you want in Hong Kong.

The introduction of free login has already enabled riders in several other markets to effectively adapt to customers’ new ordering habits. As well as this, free login has proven to be extremely popular amongst riders around the world because not only does it give you more flexibility, it increases your earning potential at busy times too.

We are confident you’ll enjoy all the benefits free login brings, and we’ve already received positive feedback from many Hong Kong riders who regularly work in those areas switched last month.

How free login works

With free login you are one tap away to go online at any time wherever you want in Hong Kong without booking sessions in the Planner.

Statistics also no longer matter in free login, so if you find yourself unable to work on short notice, this won’t affect your ability to access work in the future. All you need to do is go online anywhere in Hong Kong to start receiving orders.

Opportunities to earn more

Riders’ earning potential in Hong Kong is increasing – with more than 3000 new restaurants joining the platform in 2020 and lots of customers choosing to order essentials from new grocery partners. On top of this, more companies across Hong Kong are using Deliveroo for business orders. All of this leads to more orders for riders like you!

As always, there will also be incentives and fee boosts available at different times in different zones to help you earn more. You can view fee boosts in the Planner.

Saturdays and Sundays from 6pm to 9pm are still our busiest times of the week, which makes them the best times to ride. In general, earnings are always higher at lunch and dinner times:

Updates to the app

As well as having more orders, we want you to have more information about where you can earn most. From 23 Jan 2021, you’ll also see the new heatmap feature in the app.

With 3 new simple levels of demand (busy, moderate, and not busy) that’s updated every 5 minutes, the all new live heatmap will help you decide when and where to go online to maximise your earnings. The busier an area is, the more orders available there are to deliver.

Onboarding new riders

We will continue to carefully monitor and limit the number of newly onboard riders, and only onboard new riders in a zone when we’re unable to meet customer demand, or we anticipate a large increase in the number of customers using Deliveroo. This ensures that we can deliver a reliable service to customers while making sure you can maximise your earnings when working with us.

Staying safe during COVID-19

This switch to free login means that if you ever feel unwell and need to self-isolate or simply can’t work for a while, you can take time off without worrying about booking sessions when you want to get back on the road.

We know this can be a worrying time, which is why in addition to introducing free login, we’ll continue to support you with:

  • Free face masks – you can order yours here.
  • Free health & wellness programme provided by Bowtiesign up and you and your loved ones can get unlimited GP consultations, Chinese medicine doctor visits, acupuncture and bone setting services at exclusive rates.
  • ZA Relief FundAs a Deliveroo rider, if you test positive for COVID-19, you’d be able to claim $20,000 as long as you can supply proof of diagnosis from a hospital, the invoice of your medical expenses and your ID.
  • Deliveroo’s Rider Support Fund –  if you catch the virus or if you are instructed to be in isolation by a medical authority, riders who work regularly with Deliveroo can apply for financial help through our Rider Support Fund.

Statistics and booked slots

Any slots you booked between 23-31 January will be removed, because with free login you can go online anytime! The statistics page will remain in the app, and you may see your ‘Super peak participation’ statistic change based on when you ride, but they will no longer have any effect on how you work with Deliveroo.

Boost Fees

You can still secure boost fees every week by finishing each Friday with an acceptance rate of 80% or higher. The boost fee mechanism is not impacted by the launch of Free Login and you can continue to track the boost fee on the homepage of your app.

FAQs

Since the COVID-19 outbreak began in early 2020, the way customers use Deliveroo has changed. The days and times customers typically place orders are less predictable, and have led to higher demand at different times. In a recent survey, 89% of riders told us the ability to work when you want was important to you, and almost three times as many riders said they favoured a system that enables them to go online at any time compared to those who favoured a booking system.

Therefore, to increase your flexibility and control over how you work, we are introducing free log-in, so you can ride and earn whenever and wherever you want.

With free login you are one tap away from going online whenever and wherever you want in Hong Kong without booking sessions in the Planner, giving you more chances to reach an 80% acceptance rate and lock in your boost fees every week!

A new heatmap in the home screen lets you know where it is busiest and where you can get the most orders offered to you. With 3 simple levels of demand (busy, moderate, and not busy) that’s updated every 5 minutes, your heatmap will help you decide when and where to go online. The busier an area is, the more orders available there are to deliver. We also carefully monitor the number of riders that are online and delivering orders to decide how many new riders we need to onboard.

Peak hours are our busiest times – when people are eating – and you can expect to earn more at these times than during other hours of the day. In free login you can continue to work whatever hours you like – as you would under the booking system. Working super peak hours only impact your access to the booking tool in the booking system, and there is no booking tool in free login.

Yes, you can still secure boost fees every week by finishing each Friday with an acceptance rate of 80% or higher. The good news is that with free login, you can go online whenever you want.

There is no need to make weekly requests when you work in a free login zone because you can go online at any time within our operating hours. Any of your weekly requests will be removed, but you can still choose to go online and work at those times if you want to.

We will carefully monitor the number of riders that are online and delivering orders when we’re deciding how many new riders we need to onboard – this helps us to make sure that we have the right number of riders on the road, and that you’re earning good money. You will also be able to take advantage of fee boosts where they are available. Check the Planner in the app to see where fee boosts are being offered.

There are incentives and fee boosts available at different times in different places to help you earn extra fees. You can find fee boosts listed in the Planner, and other incentive information on the Roo Community website.
